“Are You Lost Or Are You Exploring? “

Imagine yourself in a canoe, rowing through a vast ‘Sea of Tales’ where, in every nook, there is a story and in every corner, lies a ballad. Sometimes there will be the mist of your thoughts, clouding your judgements but row; row till you reach the shores of the “Starless Sea”. This enriching universe, created by Erin Morgenstern, will haunt and agitate you until you simply give in to the explorer within yourself! This is how I would describe my experience while reading “The Starless Sea”

I have previously read books which had different individual stories within the main plot, but Morgenstern took this to a whole new different level. The way she has connected each one of them and has spun out this mythical tale that, to be honest, I don’t know any better way to explain it rather than suggesting you to go through it yourself.

The skeleton of the plot is from a timeless era when 'Time' fell in love with 'Fate'. The stars were worried that a distracted Time and Fate would not come out to anything good! They kept on separating the two and somehow the lovers found their way back to each other, until when the stars lost their patience and counselled the parliament of owls. The owls being the ruthless kind, decided to take down the less important one and leave behind a broken Time with a more broken heart. They tore apart poor Fate, with their claws and talons; but a clever mouse that came from nowhere, stole the heart of the fallen one and hid it away. The owl that fed Fate’s eyes became wiser, it could now see through time, the past, the present, the future all at once and came to be known as the “Owl King”. The stars paired Time with Chance, so that there is no hope with uncertainty. But time was always waiting to be reunited with fate, the other name of the inescapable ‘destiny’.

The protagonist of the plot is Zachery Ezra Rawlins, the son of a fortune teller. He comes across a queer book in his university library, a book without a publisher, without an author or any other identification than its title. Well this is not the strange part; out of the pages that were not torn contained the stories of metaphorical pirates, acolytes, guardians and also the tale of Zachery himself when he was a boy. A memory from his childhood, written in pages of a book that seemed way older than Zachery himself, he was determined to solve its puzzle. Following the clues he finds on the cover, a bee <The Acolytes>, a key <The Keepers> and a sword <The Guardians>, he ends up in a masquerade ball (meeting the weird and handsome Dorian), a dangerous secret club and finally, in a magical doorway created by the fierce and mysterious entity Mirabel. There is not a single part in the book that doesn’t reek of mysteriousness.

The door takes Zachery to a subterranean labyrinth filled with stories, hidden way below the earth as we know it, a land that he read of in the old pages of the creepy book. When this labyrinth is threatened Zachery cannot help but do everything in his power to protect it. With Mirabel and Dorian, he seeks together through its twisting tunnels, libraries and ball room to reach for the end of their story or rather fulfil their destinies.

A magical and an enigmatic tale of "lost things" that are meant to be found! So who are you?

A Keeper, an Acolyte, A guardian, a heart, the feather or the owl king? Six sides of a dice, six paths of life!

I would suggest this to all those out there with an itch for mystery and a boundless love for fantasy, this book will be your perfect meal!

To Finding!”
